TWO CHRONICLES ON THE HISTORY
OF KARABAGH
by G. BOURNOUTIAN
Mazda Academic Press, 2004

Communicated by Barlow Der Murgdechian to Society of Armenian Studies List

George Bournoutian's new book, "Two Chronicles on the History of  Karabagh" has been published by Mazda Academic Press. The study is an annotated English translation of two Muslim historians, Mirza Jamal and Mirza Adigozal Beg, who in the first half of the 19th century wrote histories of Karabagh. Contrary to current Azeri claims, both sources detail a strong Armenian presence in Karabagh centuries before the Russian conquest of the region. Azeri academics, led by the late Ziya Buniatov, have removed most references of an Armenian presence in Karabagh in new editions of these and other primary sources. Bournoutian has used the original manuscripts in Baku and has indicated the expunged material. In addition, the book contains various other primary non-Armeian sourcesand, for the sake of objectivity, is practically devoid of works by Armenian historians. The 300 page book includes an introduction , glossary, five maps, and an index. It can be obtained from NAASR or form Mazda Press in early October.

01/ Altarmenische Kurzgrammatik
Van Damme, Dirk / Böhm, Thomas

Reihe: Orbis Biblicus et Orientalis Subsidia linguistica, Band 1

This 43-page publication provides paradigms and tables of the grammatical forms of Ancient Armenian. In his introduction, Professor Sterling says: "The paradigms are intended to serve as a pedagogical aid. ...I have tried to keep in mind the requirements of beginning students who need to learn the paradigms and refer back to them."

It is an invaluable tool both for the beginner and for the advanced student who needs quick and easy reference to the forms of Ancient Armenian verbs and nouns.

It is the first work of its type and takes its place alongside the grammars of Ancient Armenian that have been published in recent years. Reviewed by distinguished Armenian linguists, it was revised and supplemented by Michael E. Stone.

A Concordance of The Armenian Apocryphal Adam Books by M.E. Stone

Leuven 2001, Peeters. ISBN 90-429-0941-2. 40 EURO

The study of the Adam literature has taken an increasingly central role in the study of ancient Judaism and Christianity. It is the role of Adam and Eve as paradigmatic of the human condition that gives this literature its special role. This second volume of concordances of the Armenian apocryphal Adam books makes this important collection of Armenian medieval texts available to scholars. Lipscomb's edition is now fully accessible. The Armenians were particularly productive of literature relating to the first created human beings, and in their literary creations they reveal both their imaginative creativity and their theological and conceptual sensitivities.
Stone has published numerous texts and studies relating to the Armenian apocrypha. This is the second volume of a projected three-volume set.

Medieval Armenian Architecture. Constructions of Race and Nation by C. Maranci

Leuven 2001, Peeters. ISBN 90-429-0939-0. 45 EURO

The monuments of medieval Armenia have been interpreted variously over the centuries as Gothic, Byzantine, Iranian, and "Saracen". However, few scholars have offered satisfactory answers regarding their origins and relations to other architectural traditions. This study examines the scholarship on the subject in East and West and offers a persuasive explanation for the current scholarly impasse. Maranci highlights Josef Strzygowski (1865-1941), a prominent figure in the Vienna School of art history who was closely allied to the pan-German movements of the early twentieth century. Using unpublished archival materials as well as Strzygowski's numerous publications, the author shows how the ideology of race and nation pervaded Strzygowski's theories of art, and how his ideas and persona have informed - and inhibited - subsequent generations of scholars. The concluding chapter outlines a revised study of Armenian architecture, moving from issues of architectural style to contextual inquiries of patronage and cross-cultural exchange. As a detailed survey of medieval monuments and as a historiographical case study, the work addresses a broad audience: not just art historians but all readers interested in how ideology shapes our critical faculties.

The Armenian Adaptation of the Ecclesiastical History of Socrates Scholasticus by R.W. Thomson

Leuven 2001, Peeters. ISBN 90-429-1027-5. 45 EURO

The Ecclesiastical History by Socrates Scholasticus had an unusual transmission in Armenia. In 695, the first translation (made in the sixth century) was completely revised. It was much abbreviated and changed, while at the same time additions of various kinds were introduced. Now, for the first time, that adapted text of the Ecclesiastical History is translated from the classical Armenian.
In this English rendering all the additions to the original text are highlighted and studied from the perspective of earlier Armenian literary and theological traditions. The Introduction assesses the possible motives for this adaptation of a well-known History at the end of the seventh century. Similar Armenian reworkings of foreign Histories --the Georgian Chronicles and the Syriac Chronicle of the Patriarch Michael -- are much later.
Within Armenia the secondary version of Socrates became more influential than the first, more exact translation. The present book is thus of value for the study of Armenian history and theology in the period following the break with the imperial church of Constantinople.

Lepsius archives' Edition on Armenian Genocide & Armen. Relief Work

German Lepsius Archives' Edition on Armenian Genocide and Armenian Relief Work in Turkey, Iran, Syria, and Lebanon

Now Completed on the Occasion of 24 April 2004, Armenian Martyrs' Day

Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany
Dr Johannes Lepsius Archives
Prof. Dr. Hermann Goltz
D-06099 Halle an der Saale, Germany

Every year on April 24, Armenian people along with other nations commemorate the 1.5 millions of victims of the Armenian genocide in Ottoman Turkey during World War I. Between 1895 and 1925, as part of an intended 'ethnic cleansing' in Asia Minor, the Turkish rulers organized various huge massacres among the Armenians as well as other large non-Turkish minorities.

In this context we would like to draw your attention to an edition, published by K.G. Saur Verlag (Munich), Deutschland, Armenien und die Turkei 1895-1925 (Germany, Armenia and Turkey 1895-1925), Ed. Hermann Goltz. Extensively documenting the relationships among these three countries from 1895 to 1925, this publication provides first-time access to numerous hitherto unknown documents on facts and backgrounds regarding the Armenian massacres and genocide as well as international relief work to secure the survival of the Armenian deportees.

The edition is based on the resources held by the Dr. Johannes-Lepsius-Archiv at the Martin Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, now published for the first time in such an extensive manner. Dr. Johannes Lepsius (1858-1926), an independent Protestant theologian and founder of the German Orient Mission (Deutsche Orient-Mission) as well as the German Armenian Relief organization (Armenisches Hilfswerk) dedicated his life's work to the salvation of the Armenian population in Turkey, Iran, Syria, Lebanon and on the Balkans. Striving to gain support in favour of Armenian self-determination, he also attempted to mediate between Armenians, Turks, Russians and Germans.

Supported by the Deutsche VolkswagenStiftung, this three-part edition comprises a catalogue, a microfiche edition and a subject dictionary. Upon publication of the latter, the edition of the Lepsius archives is completed.

The catalogue records the resources of the archive, including Lepsius' correspondence as well as the official documents and publications of his Armenisches Hilfswerk. In addition, this volume also includes a detailed bibliography of all articles of 13 periodicals published by Lepsius and his relief organization. All the periodicals containing these essays are now extremely rare and difficult to find.

The microfiche edition provides a full text version of extensive, hitherto unpublished documents, eye witness reports, flyers, as well as Lepsius classical documentations 'Armenien und Europa' (`Armenia and Europe') (1896), 'Bericht ueber die Lage des armenischen Volkes in der Turkei' ('Report on the Situation of the Armenian People in Turkey') (1916), and 'Deutschland und Armenien 1914-1918' ('Germany and Armenia 1914-1918') (1919), plus all 13 periodicals bibliographically recorded in the catalogue.

The Subject Dictionary of Individuals, Institutions, Places and Events (Thematisches Lexikon) gives access to the contents of both documents and journals by providing alphabetically structured articles on individuals and subjects. You will find in the Dictionary also all the names of the Armenian orphans, occurring in the Lepsius archives. The Dictionary provides extensive links to relevant documents and articles of the Lepsius periodicals.

Historical Dictionary of Armenia
by Rouben Paul Adalian

The author is an American academic historian, well known and active from coast to coast. The volume starts with two maps, one historical and one contemporary, and a thirtyseven page chronology from the 15th century B.C. to the present. The Introduction deals very briefly with Armenia's physical geographical background and its contemporary population statistics, including ethnic composition. There follows a thirty-seven page narrative chronology of Armenia's history, half of it devoted to the twentieth century. Only then comes the Dictionary properly speaking, arranged alphabetically, not chronologically. Any entry is subsequently highlighted whenever mentioned again in another entry to alert the reader to the availability of additional related information. This cross referencing condenses the volume of the dictionary while at the same time facilitating the reader's desire to form broader views on various subjects. This is especially true of long term historical, cultural and religious developments, stretching over one or two thousand years. Consequently, even if the Dictionary is essentially focused on the modern era, the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, we are also informed about the distant, sometimes very ancient roots of certain events and trends. A series of historical maps and a collection of photographs of historical buildings (even if most of them are today highly deteriorated) would have greatly enhanced the portrayal of the continuity and change in Armenia's history which was so powerfully affected by the shifting of the territorial location of the country's heartland between the Mediterranean and the northern summits of the Caucasus, with related changes in who were Armenia's neighbors, friends or enemies, conquerors and rulers.

On the whole the volume is highly successful in providing us with a broad and reliable socio-historical background to the politically still quite unsettled and economically devastated present day Armenia, which reemerged as an independent state only recently, after suffering many centuries of total subservience to, and partition by, Persia, the Ottoman Empire, and Russia, causing mass emigrations already long before the holocaust of the early part of the last century virtually emptied the historical core of Armenia of Armenians.

Last but not least, the excellent thirty-eight page bibliography must be mentioned. Multilingual, but with an emphasis on English language sources, it has a table of contents. The "General" section refers to albums, atlases, bibliographies, dictionaries, etc. The "Historical" section, by far the longest, is divided into periods. The "Armenian Genocide" is a separate three page section. The "Cultural" section includes architecture and arts as well as literature and linguistics. The "Societal" section includes "Church and Religion," "Diaspora," "Survivor Accounts," and "Travel Accounts." The"Political" is quite long while the "Economic" one is surprisingly short, indicating a lack of serious interest in the subject by the Armenian society and, by the same token, hinting why the economic policies of the post-independence Armenian governments have been so unsteady and have produced such disappointing results.

The Historical Dictionary of Armenia should not fail to find a spot on the shelves of every college and public library in the English-speaking world as well as in the bookcases of every home where interest in the Near-Eastern roots of Western civilization continues to be cultivated.
