A DAY FOR REFLECTION AND INTROSPECTION

April 26, 2006: 91st COMMEMORATION OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

---JERUSALEM--- The Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Armenian Studies Program invites you to commemorate the 91st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on April 26, 2006.  A poignant yet positive evening of reflection and introspection will take place in the presence of the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Archbishop Torkom Manoogian.  Reception begins at 6:30pm, followed by an official ceremony at 7:00p.m., at Beit Belgia on the Hebrew University Givat Ram campus.

The program (two days after the April 24 official date of commemoration) will feature an important addresses by Member of Knesset Yossi Sarid and by distinguished Fulbright Scholar Professor Abraham Terian.  Also in attendance will be His Excellency Mr. Tsolag Momjian, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Armenia and Professor Michael E. Stone, Director of the HU Armenian Studies Program.

The Armenian Genocide was the organized deportation and murder of 1.5 million Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Turks between 1915 and 1917.  Armenians worldwide commemorate this tragedy on April 24; on that date in 1915, 300 Armenian leaders and intellectuals in Constantinople (Istanbul today) were deported and murdered.  Later that day, 5,000 Armenian laymen were brutally killed in the streets and in their homes.

Even more acutely than the situation vis-à-vis survivors of the Nazi Holocaust, there is almost no-one left alive who witnessed this great tragedy; significantly increasing the necessity of commemoration.

More information will follow in a subsequent release.
