The "Bird Mosaic"

This Armenian mosaic of the 6th Century CE is found in 1894 at the Mousara quarter, north of the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem. It measures 7m x 4m and bears an inscription in Armenian.

Point with your mouse at the top of the picture and explore the inscription and a detail of this beautiful mosaic or to the center of the picture for a closeup view of a vase of grapes.

A spectacular new mosaic!

In November 1991 a new Armenian inscription has been found in the same area at the north of the Damascus Gate. It was apparently part of a vast monastery with chapels, hospices and graveyards.

New excavations at the Jaffa Gate
In the summer of 1997 another spectacular find was made: just outside the walls of the Jaffa Gate yet another Armenian monastary was uncovered. The inscriptions indicated that this structure had to be dated to the 6/7th Century CE. At this early date no pictures are yet available, but as soon as they reach us, we will post these unique photographs.
