Out- and Indoor research of Bio- and Material Cultures at Qumran and the Dead Sea



Under the Auspices of COST Action D42, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Science and Humanities and the Israel Antiquity Authority
By promoting research in the domain of professional education in the conservation of our national and international heritage, it is hoped that awareness of the past combined with the technical expertise to preserve it can be emphasized and taught to the next generation of researchers.

This is the third International Conference in “Science and Technology in Archaeology and Conservation” applied to Qumran and the Judean Desert manuscripts alone

The meeting is scheduled in Jerusalem on May 25 and 26, 2010



The conference will be open for researchers of many science techniques who will share their experience in studying archaeological artifacts by promoting research and heritage conservation in order to set up databases in various fields of interest that can be tapped in globally.

The organizing committee consisting of Staff members Jan Gunneweg and Chuck Greenblatt invite studies in Bio-archaeological Analytical Technique-applications, Osteoarchaeology, Faunal and Floral research, Dating (Organic and Inorganic Materials), Biomaterials (textile), Technology & Provenance (Stone, Plasters, Pigments, Ceramics, Glass, Metals).


Suggested Topics that may serve for a Poster Session:
  • Dead Sea environment
  • Cave(s) environment
  • GIS-technology applied to the course of Qumran's water system
  • New, original ideas concerning Qumran
  • Ostraca weathering and their protection
  • Restoration and Conservation of textiles, coins, parchment and papyrus
  • Various Digital Imaging Applications concerning the scrolls
  • Artificial Aging of parchment; its pros and cons
  • Research into Ancient Technologies used at Qumran
  • Ink analyses on parchment, ceramic and stone
  • Parchment tomography-laminography
  • Virtual and/or 3-D reconstruction of Qumran in hyperspace.
  • Tuberculosis versus leprosy in the Jericho-Dead Sea area
  • Fighting fungi


Some scholars will receive time to an oral presentation. Others will presesent a poster. The poster board format is 85x110 cm.

ABSTRACT


Abstracts (150-200 words) for lectures and/or posters should be submitted before 15th of April 2010.

Abstracts should be in English and in Word-format without photographs or graphs. The abstract topic should be close to the main topics mentioned above and be send by email to both conveners mentioned below.

Abstracts will be published in a booklet of the Meeting, whereas the pubished papers in Meeting Proceedings will be discussed.
